The searing sun like a purging fire was putting every living thing to the test. Under its relentless light, appearances could no longer survive. The shallow roots, the immature fruit, the hidden weaknesses, all were revealed. Only what had truly grown could endure. So it is with the trials that God permits in our lives. Seasons of suffering, uncertainty, loss, and waiting are not merely obstacles; they are revelations. They expose what is real within us. Under the heat of adversity, borrowed convictions wither, false securities crumble, and masks fall away. What remains is the truth of who we have become. St. Francis understood this well. He did not seek comfort but transformation. Like gold refined by fire, he allowed hardship to purify his heart until he could stand in the blazing light of God’s love without fear. The saints are not those who avoided the fire; they are those who were changed by it. The mature tree does not curse the sun. Having grown deep roots and sound fruit, it can offer itself freely to the very light that tests it. In the same way, a soul rooted in God need not fear life’s scorching seasons. What purifies us may also reveal the holiness that has been quietly growing within us all along.
When the heat of life intensifies, what does it reveal about the roots of your soul?
