The Discipline of “I”
We often look around and see what needs to change, people, situations, the world itself. But real transformation doesn’t begin “out there.” It begins within.
St Francis lived this truth deeply. He didn’t wait for the world to become more peaceful, more generous, more faithful. He became it. Quietly. Consistently. Personally.
“Improve the world” can feel overwhelming. But “I will become better today” — that’s possible.
When we shift from they should change to I will change, something powerful happens:
- Peace begins with how I respond, not how others behave.
- Kindness begins with the words I choose today.
- Faith grows through the small, hidden acts I commit to.
St Francis didn’t preach transformation as an idea, he lived it as a daily decision. Every act of humility, every moment of forgiveness, every sacrifice was a quiet “I will.”
Practical steps to live this:
- Before reacting, pause and ask: What can I do better here?
- Replace one complaint today with one act of gratitude
- Choose one person to treat with unexpected kindness
End the day with a simple reflection: Where did I grow?
The world changes differently than we expect. Not through force, but through example. Not through control, but through conversion of heart.
Improvement starts with “I.”
And when one life changes, it quietly begins to change everything.
