Silence That Speaks

The Hidden Place

There’s something deeply Franciscan about hiddenness. St. Francis didn’t seek attention, applause, or recognition. He sought God… in silence, in simplicity, in places where no one else was looking. His life echoes the words of Matthew 6:6

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen…”

In a world that constantly asks us to be visible, to perform, to share everything, we are invited to do the opposite: to withdraw, even briefly, into a sacred privacy with God.

Because the truth is, what is formed in secret carries power in public.

St Francis understood that transformation doesn’t begin on a stage. It begins on your knees. In the quiet. In the honest, sometimes messy conversation with God.

  • Practical steps to live this: Create your “inner room” daily. It doesn’t have to be perfect. A corner, a chair, a walk. What matters is intention. Show up consistently.
  • Close the door, externally and internally. Silence the need to impress, explain, or perform. God already sees you fully.
  • Pray honestly, not perfectly. St Francis didn’t bring polished words, he brought his whole heart. Speak to God as you are, not as you think you should be.
  • Stay a little longer than comfortable. Real prayer often begins after the distractions settle. Give God space to meet you there.
  • Carry the silence into your day. The fruit of hidden prayer is peace, clarity, and quiet strength that others will notice, even if they don’t know why.

In that secret place, your heart is slowly being shaped into something eternal.
