Silence is not always presence.
A person can stay quiet while their mind is somewhere else entirely.
And even listening is not the same as truly hearing.
To hear another person requires openness, humility, and attention of the heart. It means allowing someone’s words to reach beyond our ears and touch our understanding. Many conversations fail not because people speak poorly, but because few are willing to truly receive what is being said.
In the spirit of St. Francis, deep listening is an act of love. St Francis listened not only to words, but to suffering, silence, creation, and the quiet voice of God within ordinary moments. He understood that presence itself can heal.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer another person is not advice, answers, or reactions but the rare experience of being genuinely heard.
