Modesty = ‘Clothed in Grace’
Franciscan Virtue for Today

In Franciscan spirituality, modesty isn’t about self-denial alone, it’s about honouring the dignity of every person and creature, and living in harmony with God’s gifts.
Modesty flows from the belief that we are beloved children of God, not objects to be displayed or trophies to be admired. It shapes how we dress, speak, and carry ourselves; with respect for ourselves and for others.

What Modesty Looks Like in Daily Life:
» Clothing that reflects respect for your body as God’s temple
» Words and actions that uplift instead of provoke or tempt
» Humility in success and courage in vulnerability
» Simplicity in possessions; choosing need over excess
» Gentleness toward others, especially in how we speak about them
» …

Modesty nurtures our hearts, we are not shrinking from the world, but engaging with it in a way that reflects God’s love.

Practical Tips to Grow in Modesty:
» Pray for a modest heart. Begin your day by asking God for purity of intention
» Reflect before you post. On social media, choose content that builds up, not distracts or objectifies
» Simplify your wardrobe. Choose clothing that fosters dignity and respect for yourself and for others
» Mind your language. Let your words be true, peace-filled, and gracious
» Practice gratitude. When we’re thankful, we’re less driven by comparison or display
» Serve others. Francis taught that serving the least among us is the highest form of love and modesty moves us gently toward others’ needs
» …

Modesty teaches us to find our worth not in admiration, but in God’s gaze.

Let’s walk with St Francis, not hiding our light, but grounding it in love, humility, and respect.
