Above all else, guard your heart…

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23

St. Francis understood that the heart is sacred ground. Not every voice deserves access to it. Not every environment deserves influence over it. Not every wound deserves to become your identity.

St Francis guarded his heart not by building walls of pride, but by protecting the inner place where God speaks quietly. He walked away from bitterness, greed, violence, and the need to prove himself to the world. He chose simplicity because he knew a cluttered soul cannot hear Heaven clearly.

To guard your heart means to be attentive to what shapes your spirit, the conversations you entertain, the anger you rehearse, the people you constantly allow to drain your peace, the noise that slowly hardens your soul. A guarded heart is not cold. It is deeply alive. It knows when to love, when to forgive, and when to step away in peace. St Francis teaches us that purity of heart is not weakness, it is spiritual strength. A person who protects their inner peace becomes free enough to love the world without becoming consumed by it. Guard your heart carefully. Because whatever lives there will eventually shape your words, your choices, and the kind of person you become.
